Kumashiro defines common sense as information we all should know. He says that it is not universal but changes throughout different contexts. He states that it is they way we think things should be or the “norm”. If we think about the way teachers teach and schools are organized in Canada we will all come up with the same sorts of ideas.
The importance of paying attention to common sense is as to not allow it to be oppressive to those we are teaching. Some of the practices we see in schools can be oppressive and marginalize individuals, we need to be aware of these common-sensical or “norm” practices and we need to examine and challenge them.
